One file three names - Lotus Notes is like that

I just talked to a customer of ours.  He has lots of different things he does in addition to administering a Notes server.  He asked me a question I never thought of:  "how come a mailfile has three names?  The path, the title and the name in the person document?"

IBM does things differently from Apple.  Apple tries to give the user few choices to minimize confusion but IBM tries to give the user many choices to maximize flexibility.

When we write our ReduceMail Pro software we try to be more like Apple.  We know that our system will be used by Admins who have lots of other things on their mind.  Under these circumstances we think minimizing choice is the way to go.

Lotus Notes end users also have very little time to learn the intricacies of Notes, that's why we have been pushing for a simpler Notes client.  Some of our customers believe the Notes client will go away completely.  If it does not, it may be time to give one file no more than two names!
