Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

Eugen Tarnow  September 13 2011 12:50:03 PM
In a prior blog entry, I questioned whether Lotus Notes’s move to Java in R8 was a mistake. One of the concerns that inspired me to write that was the lack of a substantive Lotus Notes client on the Ipad. The absence clearly stemmed from the fact that Apple’s mobile devices do not support Java applications. As an Apple and IBM customer, I find Lotus Notes Traveler insufficient for my portable work needs. After all, if I can’t easily access Lotus Notes applications from my Ipad, then why have any form of Lotus Notes on the device at all? The applications are what make Lotus Notes such a fantastic piece of software. I was personally disappointed but also concerned that this would put Lotus Notes at a competitive disadvantage going forward as mobile devices already start to take center stage in computing.

Some did not agree with me, though. One commenter from the prior blog entry said “I don't see the need for an iPad client. Traveler is great on the iPad too [and] for everything else.” I also corresponded with someone at IBM who insisted that the future on mobile devices was Lotus Notes Traveler and X-pages.

However, I spoke recently with a ReduceMail Pro customer who said that they would love a real Lotus Notes client on the Ipad. Though the opinions of our customers matter most to the ReduceMail Pro team, we want to see what the Lotus Notes community in general thinks. I ask for a vote, if you please. Reply “yes” or “no” in the comment section. Would you want a Notes client for the Ipad or other such mobile devices? We want to get to the bottom of this.

Talk to Teamstudio. Their unplugged stuff is pretty impressive.

I agree with Paul.

But I also think Notes have to have apps on all platforms. Maybe they should license Teamstudio. Maybe have a light client. Just to say "learn XPages and use traveler" isn't enough IMHO.

No. If only XPages is moving forward there is no need for a client because the client will more or less do the same than what can be achieved in a (tablet) browser.

No! Agree with Henning.

Right now it would be great to have, but it would be even greater if IBM Lotus was to push XPages even further... and faster

5Tim Tripcony  9/13/2011 2:58:54 PM  No

The moment a viable solution exists for secure, offline access to an XPage, there is no need for a native client... on any platform or device.

Yep definitely

Yes, many reasons. At this stage a client can provide technologies that a browser will never be able to deliver. Why do we want to limit Notes to Browser Technologies ? If we want Notes to stay ahead of the pack, we need to be able to deliver more than our competitors on browsers.

I think you are really drawing the wrong conclusion when you say "The absence clearly stemmed from the fact that Apple’s mobile devices do not support Java applications. "

This is not clear at all! Android is a Java platform. There's no Notes client on Android, nor is there likely to be one.

The Notes client did not "move to Java". It was put inside a Java wrapper. All of the core is still written in C, and that's not going to change. Not any time soon, anyhow.

Now, all of this is irrelevant to the question of whether people want a Notes client for iPad. I'm sure many people would. I'm equally sure, however, that many people would be perfectly happy with technology that allows individual apps to be published from Domino servers onto their iPad, without all the overhead of a Notes client -- and they don't care whether those apps are going to be xPages or something else. What value would a full client bring? Replication of NSF files, and the ability to cut and paste doclinks, and... is thre anything else?

No, Traveler is great and Xpages the way to go for everything else!

10Hans Mäder  9/13/2011 5:16:00 PM  Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

Yes. I'd like a Notes Client for iDevices.

Tim @5 nails it.

12Mike Brown  9/13/2011 6:11:03 PM  Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

I think Rich Schwartz is on a good point! What would the purpose of a client be, and could any tablet device really accommmodate such a client? What about the NSFs?

We are trialling using the VM View Client for IPad that gives us fully secured remote access to our desktop, which includes the full Notes Rich client. So far it looks promising.

14Christian Tillmanns  9/14/2011 1:32:04 AM  Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

Yes.

I am using my iPad for travelling but the CRM I use isn't working correctly in Safari. I'd rather had a real client.

15Simon O’Doherty  9/14/2011 6:00:12 AM  Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

My personal opinion (not IBMs).

As I understand it the Apples terms on the Appstore would prevent the notes client from being sold.

Same reason the C64 emulator wasn't allowed on the appstore.

16John Lindsay  9/14/2011 6:03:47 AM  Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

Yes - for no other reason than I'd like to have one. Not all of us use X-Pages and as Christian says traditional apps don't always work that great in the safari browser.

Having said that though I can't see it happening - I understand that there is far more demand for Designer on a Mac and there is no sign of that ever happening. :-)

I have found one of the great things about Domino is the ease of connecting to applications, even when offsite. This makes deployment as "rapid" as the development. This fact should not be overlooked.

Have Traveler provide a similar MDS-type solution for Domino, where a Traveler enabled device could have access to internally facing Domino resources.

Not to say that the client is dead, but it is not the right direction to go for tablet/mobile devices. xPages is the preferred direction for tablets/mobile devices.

I am voting for world peace...

This wish may come true as probably as a Notes client for the iPad or any other further development of the classical Notes client platform.

19Stephen Hogan  9/16/2011 5:34:58 AM  Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

Um, aren't we all forgetting about iNotes here?

20Gunter Friedmann  9/25/2011 8:32:06 AM  Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

Yes, it would be great to have a full (or light) Lotus Notes client on the iPad, the iPhone is a little bit small screen, but with the right Notes app this will work also fine.

21Giovanni Miraglia  10/11/2011 6:25:31 PM  Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

Yes, Notes Client for IPAD would bring a real advantage in our daily business!

22Jeff Weesner  11/20/2014 8:00:56 PM  Would you want a Notes Client for the Ipad?

Yes, looking to make all our applications browser based because mobile is not microsoft centric.
