Why archive mail - from a storage point of view

    Eugen Tarnow  January 5 2009 06:34:45 PM
Typically, end users spend most of their time on the most recent mail - from today and a few days earlier.  Mail older than a week is rarely accessed and mail older than a  month is hardly ever accessed.

It pays to archive, i.e. separate old mail from new mail, for several reasons.  Fundamentally, the Service Level Agreement is different for old and new mail.  One should take advantage of this fact to lower the cost associated with old mail by separating it out from the new mail.

In other words, one can store old mail on cheaper servers, lower the clustering level, lower the bandwidth, and lower the backup effort.

At the same time, it is good to not add costs in this effort, in particular, do not add end user confusion - it can remove the savings of the above.
